WHAT WE BELIEVE
Creative + Connected
From the beginning, The Field School has been a haven for
innovation and progressive education. As we move into our next
chapter, we recommit ourselves to the following
core beliefs:
Meaning and Relevance
The Field School has always believed that students learn best
through experience, when their learning is authentic,
meaningful, and connected to the world around them.
Accordingly, the goal of our program is to inspire curiosity,
expand perspective, discover more about yourself, affect change,
and create impact in the world. By doing intentionally structured
work that’s relevant to students and the world, students learn to
be bold, empathetic, and purposeful.
Individuals in a Diverse Community
Students learn best when they feel a sense of belonging at their
school – when they are seen and valued by their teachers, peers,
and school community. Our approach to community
emphasizes respect for, and the inclusion of, all community
members as individuals. We equally value a focus on the
common good and the well-being of the school community as a
whole. This balance means that we prioritize the community
without prioritizing sameness. Field is a place where our
classrooms are better because they mirror the outside world: We
have a diversity of identity, thought, experience, and ability. We
believe in the interconnectedness of people and ideas, and we
strive to be a learning community at every level of the school.
Challenge and Growth
Education should present meaningful challenges. Students are
ful昀椀lled when they feel engaged and challenged, and students
learn best when allowed to explore and take risks while being
supported as they build their skills toward independence.
Meaningful challenge calls on us both to learn new skills and
unlearn old ideas or habits. Students must be encouraged to step
outside of their comfort zones and take risks. By
de昀椀nition, this necessary, lifelong process isn’t always
comfortable. However, challenge can be joyful. Creating this
environment requires us to believe in students deeply enough to
hold high expectations, as well as to engage, understand, and
encourage their innate curiosity.
