Vision for Teaching and Learning Digital - Flipbook - Page 4
WHERE WE’RE GOING
Healthy communities evolve over time. In the next chapter of the
school’s history, we commit to staying up-to-date with research, as
well as revisiting the tenets of progressive education, so that our
program and our pedagogy becomes more intentional even as we hold
true to our values. Field’s vision for the future of teaching and learning
is below:
Interdisciplinary Coursework and Collaboration
Real life is not divided into academic disciplines. By re昀氀ecting this
reality, we can deepen student learning and cultivate transferable
skills. We will move toward greater development of interdisciplinary
curriculum that is not necessarily delineated into departments and/
or grade levels, but rather organized around skill progression and
shared standards. We will encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and
co-planning, and foster interdisciplinary learning through the
re-examination of our physical spaces, schedule, and calendar.
Project-Based Field Work
Field will be increasingly connected to the broader community through
partnerships, 昀椀eld work, and projects. We will tap into the incredible
resources of the DC region in particular, helping students 昀椀nd
meaningful connections between the classroom and the world.
As we do so, students will increasingly work in teams, lead and/or
follow other students, identify dilemmas, solve problems, and
create 昀椀nished products. As a result, they will be empowered to
become agents of change in their communities. Our classroom will
continue to be de昀椀ned in many ways, and not always as an
on-campus space with walls. We will increasingly provide opportunities
for students to work both on and off-campus, bringing the “classroom”
with them. Teachers will strengthen the planning muscles to design
complex, clear projects that assess student learning with evidence. As
we do this, the connection between the classroom and world will be
increasingly seamless.
Capstone Experiences
Field will develop signature capstone experiences, rooted in the
students’ passions and connecting at least two disciplines,
throughout the 6-12 program. These experiences will provide
opportunities for students to re昀氀ect on learning, synthesize their work,
and transfer their understanding to new contexts – therefore
demonstrating mastery. Our capstone experiences will include
ongoing, meaningful connections with the broader community. The
school will be known for developing future entrepreneurs, problem
solvers, good neighbors, and responsible citizens; designing projects
that have meaningful impact; and working in the spirit of reciprocity
with community partners.
Assessment for Growth
Assessment is used both to foster and to measure student learning.
For that reason, we are committed to best practices in assessment:
a system that is longitudinal and focused on student growth, giving
students multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning; that allows
for student choice; that asks students to demonstrate mastery through
authentic, performance-based challenges; that is rooted in evidence
of learning; that provides feedback on academic learning as well as
social-emotional growth; and that is clearly understood by students
and families.
