Our Teaching
and Our Curriculum
Teaching and learning is clearly at the centre of
what we do. Our inspiring and caring staff are
experts in their subjects and hugely experienced
in ensuring your child is successful.
Our innovative ASPIRE learning traits are developed
alongside a knowledge rich curriculum, which
supports academic excellence.
Our students achieve excellent results because we
focus teaching on mastering knowledge and skills,
whilst 8lighting fires9 about the subjects we are so
passionate about.
Our School is in a stimulating environment with an
interesting progressive and relevant curriculum. The
Hemel Hempstead School is proud to be a learning
community, where teachers and students alike share
the pursuit of excellence. At Key Stage 3 students
study English, Mathematics, Science, R.E, Games,
Technology, Modern Languages, Computing, History,
Geography, Art, Dance, Drama and Music.
Students at Key Stage 4 all study English,
Mathematics, Science, Games, Personal And
Citizenship Education (PACE) and four further
options of their choosing.
There is also a large choice at post-16, where a wide
selection of programmes of A Level are enhanced by
selected vocational courses. Students can choose
the subjects and courses that are tailor-made for
them, supported by effective guidance programmes.
Teaching staff plan every lesson to be well paced
and focused on the learning objectives, varying their
approach to take account of different learning needs.
They set clear and consistent guidelines and have
high expectations of what their students can
achieve. The school values of Responsibility,
Respect, Relationships, Reflection and Resilience
(the 5 Rs) are the basis for the culture in the
classroom, and teachers have a genuine concern for
their students happiness and wellbeing whilst in
school.
Students are encouraged to be creative in their
thinking and to take responsibility for becoming
increasingly independent as learners as they
progress through the school. By the time students
reach the Sixth Form they are able to support
younger students in their learning, providing an
important additional dimension to the learning
environment.
Through PACE students learn to be safe, resilient
and active citizens both online and in the real world.
The school9s aim is to help all students to develop
into confident, articulate and responsible adults, who
are enthusiastic about learning so that they can
realise the very best
version of themselves to be leaders and champions
of tomorrow.
