CELEBRATING LAND CONSERVATION
IN THE WESTERN MOUNTAINS
Q. What offers a 360-degree view of Maine’s Western Mountains, provides habitat
for moose, bear, and brook trout, and is now guaranteed to
remain forested indefinitely?
A. Quill Hill and Perham Stream!
This year we partnered with the Trust for Public Land, the
State of Maine, and supporters like you to permanently
conserve two big parcels in the Rangeley area. Quill Hill
and Perham Stream are part of the landscape visible
from Mt. Abraham and Saddleback Mountain. Quill Hill’s
360-degree summit view is readily accessed by car or ATV
and draws over 30,000 visitors annually.
We usually just call this area of Maine the Western
Mountains, but it’s also part of the Appalachians—a vast
chain of mountains and wetlands that stretches from
Alabama to the maritime provinces of Canada. The
Appalachian range is so breathtakingly biodiverse, and
its well-being is so deeply intertwined with many human
communities, that TNC has highlighted it as one of four
global focal areas essential to protect in this decade.
Taken together, the Quill Hill and Perham Stream parcels
encompass over 13,500 acres. Some of this acreage will be primarily recreational, some set aside as ecological
reserve to grow without human interference, and some managed for timber harvest—the classic “triad” of land use
types that all play a role in keeping the Appalachians forested and thriving for generations to come.
