I think there is a danger in ascribing
that role to people. Many of our heroes end up having far too human
tendencies and then we are outraged.
Life is messy and complicated and
we are all struggling to get through
it. Perfection doesn’t exist. The best
we might be able to hope for is “perfect imperfection.” After all, pedestals are over rated, and really easy to
fall from.
Maybe that is the new definition
of a hero. Someone who survives
seemingly insurmountable events
and then turns around and extends a
hand to someone coming up behind
them. It’s possible no one will ever
see that gesture: that it remains a
quiet moment of humanity. Like the
woman who grabbed the hood of my
coat one day and yanked me out of
traffic before the car that ran the red
light almost drove over me. I still do
not know who she was. We stood
there staring at each other and I am
not sure I even thanked her.
Enter the “anti” hero. Which is most
of us.
