LESS IS ACTUALLY MORE WHEN
IT COMES TO THE KITCHEN
AND JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE
SPACE FOR IT DOESN’T MEAN
YOU NEED IT.
A functional kitchen is something
most of us never learned about. We
bought what we thought we needed
and made space for it. Kitchens are
NOT set up to support us. Cabinets
tend to be narrow, deep and tall, just
the opposite of what makes sense.
Instead of being able to see everything at a glance, cabinets become
repositories for expired food. Refrigerators are big, and buying in bulk
seems like a way to save money.
Wrong. Food loses its nutritional value over time so buying more than we
need creates expensive waste. Cluttered kitchens have become a major
obstacle to healthy eating.
Here is a little exercise to help you
start the process of simplifying your
kitchen.
DO A REFRIGERATOR RESET
The refrigerator is immediate gratification and condiments are the ultimate refrigerator clutter lingering
long after their expiration dates. Jam
from 2019 anyone? Starting with the
refrigerator is powerful because you
open your refrigerator dozens of
times a day.
You will be shocked to find out how
much open space is in your refrigerator when you shop for meals instead
of buying food.
—Starting with condiments check all
expiration dates and toss expired
items.
—Work your way through each shelf
removing all items, check expiration
dates and be honest about what you
will use and what’s delayed trash.
—Wipe shelves and replace food
items you are keeping.
—Empty crisper drawers making a
plan for fruits and veggies. Soggy old
stuff is trash.
—Now make a list for the meals you
will make using what you have and
supplement with a trip to the grocery
store, only buying food items you
need!
AT THE END OF EACH WEEK,
YOUR REFRIGERATOR SHOULD
BE ALMOST EMPTY!
