Rochester
Settled in 1679, Rochester was originally called Sippican
and included the areas that are now Marion, Mattapoisett,
and Wareham. After it was officially incorporated in 1686,
the name changed to Rochester since many of its settlers
came from Rochester, England. Rochester was once a
dominant player in the shipbuilding industry because it
had direct access to Mattapoisett Harbor. However, Marion
became its own town in 1852 and Mattapoisett did the
same in 1857, leaving the town without access to the water.
Rochester soon became a farming community, which it
remains to this day.
Cranberry growing is very popular for those who live by bogs.
There are a number of private bogs throughout town. To
catch a glimpse of a private operation, walk through the trails
at Lionberger Woods during the fall.
