At a glance
Aside from its award-winning annual seafood festival at Ninigret Park,
which no one should miss, Charlestown is loaded with goodness. For
one thing, it has an enviable amount of natural resources within its
59.3 square miles. That footprint includes a 22.5-mile mix of ocean,
freshwater ponds, estuaries, inlets, the Pawcatuck River, and more.
That’s a generous amount of water for one little town. Its roughly
8,000 residents seem to know one another, and they cherish and
protect their resources. This town, and its villages, like the pristine
village of Quonochontaug – set on a spit of sand – fiercely preserves
its historic buildings and monuments. Some of the structures date
back to the early 1600s, and many old establishments, such as the
Wilcox Tavern and the General Stanton Inn, are still in operation
today.
