Supported by high-speed Internet service and mobile technology, as
well as ready access to airports in Providence and Boston, these homebased businesses reflect a seismic shift in the U.S. economy. There are
more than 16 million people working from home nationwide, and that
number is expected to increase nearly 70 percent by 2018. One study
suggests that about 35 percent of these home-based businesses see
annual revenues exceeding $125,000.
On Cape Cod, home-based businesses also represent those started
by many older professionals who don’t necessarily retire to the Cape,
but repurpose themselves. They are trading in their 9-to-5 jobs and
commutes for mobile consultancies. Or, in many cases, they begin
entirely new careers motivated as much by passion as by paycheck.
A study by the Cape Cod Commission found that 40 percent of today’s
secondhome owners who plan to move here full time expect to work—
mostly from home.
One publisher who retired early to the Cape found himself owning
and operating four magazines and a website within three years of his
arrival—relying only on a laptop computer, tablet and smart phone, all
from his office at home overlooking a marsh and watching the tide flow
