It has also been named
#1 on the list of “The
100 Best Small Towns in
its borders. Like many small New England towns by the water, Essex
is easily walkable and highly picturesque. There are several historic
sites in this village and plenty points of interest. The downtown area
is alive with dining and shopping establishments, and time traveling is
made easy by hopping on the Essex Clipper Dinner train, which offers
a four-course meal on its restored 1920s Pullman, while whisking
along the Connecticut River. Essex also boasts a particularly beautiful
This small town has two yacht clubs: Essex Yacht Club and Essex
Corinthian Yacht Club, both on the Connecticut River. Founded in
1933, Essex Yacht Club, with its impeccable clubhouse, has many
dining options. The club is based on the “principles of friendship and
a deep love of yachting.” The Essex Corinthian Yacht Club also offers
dining, and both lunch and dinner are served in the clubhouse.
There are a number of golf clubs in the surrounding areas of Essex. The
Fenwick Golf Course in Old Saybrook has the distinction of being the
oldest public golf course in CT; the Greenwich Country Club is the
second oldest in the state. The Fenwick’s course is set on the river and is
a lush and beautiful course. Its links-style design was made to resemble
the seaside layouts of the British Isles, which means it has plenty of
character and beautiful topography. The Old Lyme Country Club is a
private members only organization, and aside from its stunning course,
the club offers tennis courts and a lovely swimming pool.
The Essex school system consists of two elementary schools, a middle
school and a regional high school, as well as the Connecticut Coastal
Academy in Essex proper. The Children’s Tree Montessori School is in
Old Saybrook, and Saint Johns Catholic School is also located in lovely
Old Saybrook.
