KRC BY THE
NUMBERS
The Kidney Research Centre (KRC) was established in 2000 at The
Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and was the first centre of its kind in
Canada devoted exclusively to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of
kidney disease.
Since then, the KRC has remained at the forefront of kidney research,
conducting ground-breaking studies on multiple fronts. Over the past year,
our internationally recognized researchers collectively published 136
manuscripts, advancing our knowledge of kidney disease. Biomedical
investigations explore kidney function in health and disease, identifying
opportunities for innovative diagnostics and treatments. Our clinical
research covers various topics, including the prevention and management
of acute and chronic kidney disease, as well as advancements in dialysis
and kidney transplantation. And our focus on population-level data from
health administrative databases contributes vital insights into the factors
associated with kidney disease.
The Ottawa Hospital is also home to one of the largest nephrology
programs in Canada. Our on-site chronic hemodialysis program currently
has more than 650 patients, while our home dialysis program, which is
one of the largest home dialysis programs in North America, currently has
more than 220 patients. We have a holistic approach to care, with a team
of nephrologists, nurses, dieticians, and social workers.
