“The moment you empower the girl child you have
already changed half of the world. The girl child
has dreams but the girl child is never given the
platform to realise those dreams. It is not a secret
that young women tend to be burdened in our
society. Back in the days you were not even given
the opportunity to finish your studies. Also, young
women couldn’t even dream about running JSE
listed companies,” says Matsho.
She says when women say they can’t do it it’s
because they haven’t seen anyone doing it. She
offers advice: “When they see it they will believe
that they can do it. You need to take yourself
seriously, and you need to surround yourself with
the right people. And check the information that
you consume on a daily basis.”
Aqua Air Africa has partnered with
Itukise, a programme established by
government to provide relevant work
experience to unemployed graduates
through internships. “So far we have
absorbed 3 interns from the programme.
We also employed 20 people from the
community of Ga-Rankuwa.”

of micro-organisms. “The result of this process
is chemical-free purified water with all natural
minerals,” she says.
As with all stories of accomplishment, Matsho’s
journey came with times of adversity. She says
one of the main challenges Aqua Air Africa faced
was that the technology they use is not wellknown in South Africa. She has to spend time
educating people about the technology used by
her company. “As a black woman there are also
perceptions and prejudice that I have to deal with,
but I don’t necessarily pay a lot of attention to
that,” she adds.
Aqua Air Africa is a subsidiary of Moipone Group
Investment (MGI) a company geared towards
championing transformation in South Africa.
“Transformation is important because we need
to evolve, we need to empower, and we need to
enable. That requires quite a lot of work in South
Africa,” says Matsho. She continues: “If you go to
Aqua Air Africa you will notice how we were able
to take people from the community and change
their lives. We advocate for and encourage the
upskilling of local community members, ensuring
that they see a better future for themselves.

the forefront of transformation by ensuring that
they are empowering young black women and
Matsho says she made a conscious decision
to hire quite a large number of women in the
organisation. She says she wants to become,’ that
face that changes the face of business’.
“Our business approach is one that
focuses beyond making profits, but
rather more interested in becoming
global citizens who are in touch with
the realities affecting our people,” adds
Matsho says when they placed their
plant in Ga-Rankuwa it was very
important for the company to be part
of the community instead of being an
organisation that’s just there. She reveals that her
leadership style is transformative and wants to see
her team becoming whatever they aspire to be. “I
don’t believe in employing people but I believe in
enabling people and identifying talent. When you
nurture talent you need to give people the kind
of resources they need to achieve what they want
to achieve. I believe in creating an environment
where people take ownership,” says Matsho.
There are habits in Matsho’s upbringing, at home
and in her community, which shaped her and
prepared her to be the business leader that she
is. Those habits include hobbies such as reading
autobiographies and playing sport. Her favourite
books include The 5 Am Club By Robin Sharma and
The Famished Road by Ben Okri.
