Markets

Glühwein or choucroute?

Bredele biscuits or Germknödel?

The festive period, and the season of Christmas markets, is

almost upon us. Large or small,

each market reflects the culture

of the region – food, drink, and

entertainment. Here are four of

Europe’s best.

Zagreb, Croatia

2nd December - 7th January

London flights from £49

Voted twice in a row, the best European Christmas

market by one-hundred polling travellers, the capital

city of Croatia magnetises many tourists during

Advent. This was expected, considering the fantastical festivities which enclose the large wreath and

Manduševac Fountain, located in the main square

of Trg bana Josipa Jelaia. Between the 12th

and 24th December each year, the Klovievi Dvori

Gallery in the Upper Town features an antiques fair

and an exhibition of handcrafted cards entitled, “The

Christmas of Old Zagreb”. The “Festival of Christmas

Cakes and Cookies”, which takes place between

the 16th and 23rd December at the Karas Gallery on

Praška Street, boasts a freshly-prepared tea party

overflowing with Croatian specialities like, Germknödel.

Immerse yourself into a live nativity scene near the

Cathedral, listen to Christmas carols in the European

Square and skate amongst the winter whisk upon

the 1,940 square-metre ice park.

Strasbourg Cathedrale

Strasbourg, France

25th November - 31st December

Stay at the Holiday Inn for just £69

Strasbourg, located in North-eastern France and

formerly known as Alsace, entertains an annual

market hedged by half-timbered houses and cobbled

streets, displaying giant red and white hearts, stars,

angles and snowflakes. Previously established in

1570 as Christkindelsmärik, which is French for ‘market of the Infant Jesus’, making it the oldest market

in France. Three-hundred stalls within eleven culturally-distinctive villages encompass a four-hundredyear-old towering fir tree in Place Kléber, whereupon

craftsmen practice their skills with demonstrations

of their expertise. With a new craft on show every

week at the associations' special stand, visitors can

enjoy the effortless skills of friendly professionals.

Indulge in authentic Alsatian street food; taste the

‘Flavours of Alsace’, a food-specific area in Place

des Meuniers, selling regional produce like, foie

gras (duck or goose liver), choucroute (mixed salted

meats), and bredele biscuits, served alongside mulled

wine from the Couronne d'Or region. >
