Alongside St. Mary’s Church in the heart of Hitchin is the
Wholesome Weigh, Hitchin’s very own Zero Waste shop.
Here you can refill without unnecessary packaging, in the
quantities you choose. Our fantastic products range from
loose wholefoods and refill cleaning liquids to eco-friendly
beauty products and toiletries, and more. They all share one
thing in common: being good for people and our planet!
Stepping into our shop is a treat for the senses and shopping
is simple: you provide the containers and we provide the
contents! All our whole foods and cleaning liquids are sold
loose by weight and, in case you forget to bring your own
containers, we have free brown paper bags, free donated
containers and new ones to buy.
Our food dispensers are full of wholesome organic foods
(all supplied by co-operatives & independents) at the
lowest possible prices. We also stock a great range from UK
independents such as Hodmedod’s, the Cornish Seaweed
Company and Oats of Alford and sell locally made dairy-free,
refined sugar-free and award winning artisan chocolates from
Raw Spirit and other creators.
After months of research,
networking and upcycling,
our plastic-free, organic,
fairtrade, whole food shop
was born in April 2019!
As a fun place to shop by day, by evening our shop is
transformed and opened up to host events such as workshops
on nutrition, Zero Waste, DIY beauty products, film nights
and vegan cheese evenings, with many more to come.
We are soon to launch a home delivery service, delivering
plastic-free goods on cargo bikes to customers in Hitchin and
Stevenage, who may be unable to visit the shop.
If you have any questions please visit us at 37 Churchyard
Walk where we’d be delighted to chat. You can visit our
website at www.thewholesomeweigh.co.uk to find out more
including a list of what we sell. Also follow us
@wholesomeweigh on Facebook and Instagram for updates
on events and what we are up to.
Our plant-based Deli is the latest addition to our shop,
providing the tastiest plant-based cheeses from the best
makers in the country. We’ve had an incredible response to
this from our customers, not just vegans but also those with
lactose intolerance and curious foodies. We will soon be
adding a selection of micro-greens and seasonal loose-leaf
salads grown ultra-locally without chemicals and supplied
plastic free.
Our cleaning liquids and shampoos / body washes are
supplied by SESI, an Oxford-based social enterprise. Its
range of gentle and effective eco-friendly cleaning products
are supplied to us in tubs with taps that, once empty, are
then taken back to be cleaned and reused. It is a pioneer in
creating a circular supply economy that is truly Zero Waste.
With our personal backgrounds encompassing organic food
growing, health and nutrition and environmental and social
campaigning, the vision behind our shop was simple: to
create a destination right here in Hitchin that would help
people do their bit for the environment.
