Key Learning
The following are common learning
themes identified across the three
residencies;
•
Collaboration and consultation –
Volunteers and community members
need to feel included and briefed
on decision making. This helps
to problem solve any reticence
over project decisions and reduce
fear of engagement. Always invite
consultation and identify who should
take part and why from the beginning
‘A major issue was the lack of
understanding of who the sessions were
for. I spent a lot of time talking to library
volunteers working on the desk and
encouraging their participation.’ Artist Ruth Singer
•
Inspiration – Help volunteers and
your community members feel
excited about the potential of what
could happen in your own project.
Show them the film of our project,
invite them to join in the shortlisting
and selection of artists you want to
work with. Get them to think about
the skills they would like to develop
that can benefit the library and its
communities.
•
Volunteer Champions - Have a
dedicated community champion.
It’s important to think about the
roles and responsibilities of staff –
some volunteers may be the perfect
community connectors, sitting on
several boards, community groups
or on the local parent governors.
However, as volunteers you also
have to future proof yourself against
unforeseen circumstances. Make sure
each team member has a back-up
who can step in and step up – it’s even
better if all volunteers are sharing
knowledge and skills just in case.
