Challenge One
Drop in Activity
Initial open family sessions at Glascote
had low attendance despite rigorous
efforts to promote to family groups in
the local area. Sessions were promoted
through the neighbouring children
centre but most of the families were
attending regular mornings at the centre
and were reluctant to engage in further
sessions back at the library.
The original idea of family drop-in drama
sessions didn’t work well due to barriers
and insecurity of participating in drama.
Outcome
Delivering on-location with potential
educational partners has established
a longer-term relationship to increase
traffic back into the library.
Both the local primary school and
nursery have re-established links with
the library and are now planning regular
weekly visits.
Problem Solving
The children centre advised to try
hosting after school activities. This
attracted a few families but was still
low on numbers with some participants
arriving at different times, making it
difficult to fulfil the session objectives.
We decided to focus on developing the
library’s links with the local primary
school and nursery, both located a stone’s
throw from the library but had become
disconnected from library services.
