On Reflection
Due to the tight timescales of the
project Ruth was unable to initiate
her full problem solving to these
challenges. This can be different in
every community and so it is important
to reflect upon the uniqueness of your
audience.
‘Two alternative approaches came to
mind, particularly in relation to my own
work and what might have been more
successful;
1. ‘To focus the residency around
my own work, giving talks,
demonstrations and encouraging
input into creating a piece of
work about the people and stories
within the village. Some creative
activities might have worked but
alternatives such as discussions,
film shows, presentations and
asking for input would have engaged
a much wider audience, including
men, non-creative volunteers
and wider members of the public.
I often use public contributions in
creating a piece of work; memories,
stories, objects and photographs,
and this would have worked better
in developing wider engagement in
what I was doing and why.
2. To focus the residency around the
physical space of the library, and
use the engagement time to discuss,
share and develop ideas about the
creative use of space. It would have
been really productive to consult
and develop ideas about how the
library space and resources could be
developed and changed to be a more
creative and exciting space.’
