I
believe that my maggot rig and presentation
has definitely been the difference between
having a large number of catch reports during
winter campaigns and having no activity to report.
I will take you through the materials I use on my rig
and why I believe it has brought me a lot
of success.
I fish the maggot rig on a Slip D/Combi set up with
the materials used for the hook length comprising
of two of my favorite products by Kodex. For the
boom section I use 15lbs fluorocarbon as I believe
this offers all of the best properties I look for to
aid the presentation; low visibility, stiff and hugs
the lakebed. Then right at the business end I
opt for a size 4 Genomic MGP Wide Gape
hook, whipped on using the slip D style
with a knotless knot using the Zonal
braided hooklink material. To aid the
rig mechanics I use the rig shrink
tubing, with ‘mud brown’ being my
preferred colour. Combined with
the Graviton putty used to anchor
the presentation to the bottom,
I believe this offers maximum
hooking potential. The most
critical part of the rig for me has to be the ‘Red
Wrigglers’. I was amazed by the properties of the
false maggots upon my first use of them, looking
no different from a real maggot and with a super
tough and durable texture instilling confidence in
me that I am 100% fishing and that none of the
maggots have managed to wriggle off or have been
pecked off by nuisance fish. As well as this, with
carp spending a lot of time in the thermal layers of
the lake, I believe that the vivid red colour of the
Red Wrigglers is more often than not the visual aid
that is needed to draw the carp down and buy me
the bite that many other approaches can’t buy in
the winter.
The reasoning behind the use of a cork
ball beneath the maggots is it offers a
presentation that I can be confident is
popped up from the lakebed. Also, the
rig is free from being caught up in any
of the debris that’s sitting there, due to
its buoyancy. This particular setup has
accounted for most of my winter captures
and is used in 99% of my winter fishing
