TIPS & ADVICE
7 STEPS FOR MEGA BAGGIN’ SESSIONS
Want to know some of the secrets behind those huge summer baggin’ hauls you see? Here are several tips and
tactics on how to fish the 5m line when the fish are at their hungriest…

On most commercials, there will be a natural leveling
of the near shelf at between 5m and 8m out - this
is often called simply the “5 metre line” despite not
always being exactly 5 metres out. This point where
the shelf meets the bottom is the one of the most
prolific areas to fish in the summer, because fish
naturally go there to feed. So how can you attack this
area in the best possible way? Here are 7 tips to
help you…
1
THE RIG SETUP
Set up the rig as shown with
Slot-Shot to keep the line
in-line and falling nicely. If
fish then do start coming up
in the water you will catch on
the drop (in other words, fish
take the bait before it hits
bottom).

Often, it is single banded 6mm pellet or
hooked corn that will do the trick.
2
FEED PRECISELY WITH
PLENTY OF BAIT
Use plenty of the same (usually 6mm)
pellets that you will use as a hookbait.
Keep feeding tight and have the bait
exactly on the bottom or only 1cm above.
What we mean by ‘tight’ is getting
everything happening in a 20cm circle
at most, ideally a 10cm circle - all very
precise. Feed in that tight circle with a
pole pot. Precision cannot be emphasised
enough! You want the rig sitting precisely
on the edge of the shelf, this is the crucial
aspect that people get wrong. So accurate
plumbing up is essential.
3
STRONG GEAR
It’s no good messing about with fine hooks - after all,
the idea is to catch loads and catch big. So it’s better
to be over-gunned rather than under. Use at least
0.20 main.

DOT THE FLOAT DOWN
Another thing anglers often get wrong is how
much of the float tip is showing, ideally keep
just 1.5cm showing, dotted down nicely with
a 2mm bristle. Do not fall into the trap of
thinking the float can be sticking out 3cm just
because they are feeding well, because you
may not then see the bites.

ELASTIC
TENSION

Another tip is to get your
elastic tension right.
Many anglers set it too
tight. You only want the
smallest of tension - just
enough to draw your
stonfo connector back
into the pole, else you
risk encountering hook
pulls.

TAKE YOUR TIME
If you do hit into a lump, remember
to take your time. A lot of anglers
rush but then lose the fish. It’s
better to land one at 10lb even if
it takes eight or ten minutes, as
opposed to losing it by trying to get
it in too quickly.
