TOP TIPS: FOR JIGGING
Seen by some as ‘not quite cricket’, the Jigger method allows you to freeline
a hookbait up-in-the-water, offering no resistance to a fish taking the bait,
and allowing the bait to be lifted and dropped through the upper layers of the
swim without moving the float.
A hole through the body and stem lets the
mainline run through, stopped above the float
by a rubber float stop and beneath by a small
bulk of No.8 Slot-Shot. Under the shot go the
hooklength and hook, 6 inches of 0.14 Lo-Viz
to a size 16 KM-1 barbless, with a banded hard
4mm or 6mm pellet as hookbait.
One final thing to get right is the length of line
that can be lifted and dropped through the float
body, or, in effect, the depths you can fish at.
This is all down to where the fish are, so it could
mean only have 12 inches of line to lift and drop,
or as much as 3 feet! Generally, however, the
Jigger is about catching very shallow, so shorter
is best.
Ship out, lower the rig in and let the line pull the
float until it hits the float stop. Now lift slowly
and the float will stay still, but the line will lift
until it hits the bulk of shot, taking the pellet with
it. It’s now a case of working the rig constantly
until a fish takes the bait and hooks itself. The
Middy Xtreme Jigger floats are perfect for the job
and they’re hand-made in the UK.
