TOP TIPS: WHEN TO USE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POLE ELASTIC…
The reigning Matchman of the Year and star of the ‘Master Your Fishing’ YouTube series, Lee Thornton, explains how the various
types of pole elastic from Middy cover all of his fishing needs…
I have the Hi-Viz™ Original Solid, the
Hi-Viz™ Shockcore hollow and the
Reactacore™ hollow elastics in my armoury.
So when would I use each of them?
The Reactacore™ elastic is the most recent
addition to the Middy range and it quickly
became my first choice elastic for catching
F1's and carp. The nano carbon-black
particles and micro-bore not only makes
it last longer, but also gives the elastic a
progressive action that allows me to keep
the fish under control. Reactacore™ also
allows me to use light lines – the elastic is
always powering up so it’s more difficult
for the fish to bottom out the elastic. With
one 5 metre length being able to elasticate
multiple top kits, this is a popular choice for
many anglers.
The Hi-Viz™ Shockcore is still also a favourite
of mine in some conditions. It is more
traditional with two layers, which makes it
softer and slightly stretchier. This is perfect
when targeting silverfish with the occasional
carp, in cooler weather or at any other time
when you demand a soft stretchy elastic. Do
not think that this very, very popular elastic
is superseded by Reactacore™; it certainly is
not and both have a place in my kit.
Solid elastics also have their place and
Hi-Viz™ Original has to be the best. It has
been around for as long as I remember. I
actually prefer heavy solids over hollows
when fishing for really big carp down the
edge, or tight to snags, simply due to the
reduced stretch – this allows me to either
apply large amounts of pressure to big fish,
or stop them reaching the sanctuary of
snags. I also prefer solid elastic when fishing
for silverfish through the short kits when
catching shallow. The other time solids come
into their own is during cold weather where
hollow elastics can let you down by not
retracting back into the top-kit, simply due to
the conditions.
Give all of them a try – they’re used by the
very top match anglers, including Steve
Ringer, while big match winners like Chris
Cameron and Rob Wootton (both have won
‘Match This’) use Middy elastic. They are
Lee Thornton
recognised as the best elastics available.
