DAFS have much to recommend for a wealthy philanthropist.
All the trouble and administration with managing a personal
or family foundation is outsourced and, although there is cost
that should be reduced through the economies of scale the DAF
can offer.
The philanthropist can still control what projects and causes
receive how much support and in what timeframe. They can
have their name associated with the gift(s) if they wish, or
those more inclined to follow St Matthew’s advice not to ‘do
your alms before men, to be seen of them’ can keep things
very discreet. For some the lack of total control will be a big
disincentive compared to establishing their own structure, but
DAFs are increasingly sophisticated and have much to offer.
