NEW PERSPECTIVES
NEW PERSPECTIVES
WELCOME TO THE 2019 EDITION OF EMERGING
THEMES, OUR ANNUAL COLLECTION OF
PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON NEW AND
EMERGING ISSUES IN FINANCIAL REGULATION.
Our theme for this year’s publication is “new
perspectives”. More than ever before, our clients are
having to view the world from new angles – after
45 years at the heart of Europe, the UK is now on the
outside of the EU looking in, with all of the uncertainties
and new dynamics that this creates on both sides.
In parallel, our clients are handling the realities of
a move to a new regime of personal accountability
under SMCR which is fast gaining traction in a range
of other countries; and still adjusting to life in the postMiFID II / GDPR world. In the US, the continuing shift to
an “America first” mind-set under the current
administration, not to mention the rejection of many
generally accepted standards in government, creates
fresh challenges as well as opportunities for those
working in financial services. It is no exaggeration
to say that, as we enter a new year, the legal and
regulatory landscape that our clients face over
the coming months has never been less certain.
As a firm, we also have our own new perspectives but
of a more positive variety! This is our first Emerging
Themes since our two firms – Bryan Cave and BLP –
combined in April last year to create BCLP. We chose
to come together as we recognised the need to be able
to serve our clients at the highest level in all of the major
financial centres across the globe. We both identified
that we share a commitment to having long-standing
relationships with our clients, to advance their interests
and to work together to ensure that the new risks that
they face are quickly identified and managed effectively.
We also saw that we shared a deep appetite for
innovation, constantly questioning the ways that we
serve our clients to find better and more efficient ways
of providing our services.
We hope that you enjoy reading this year’s publication
and that it helps you in identifying new areas as you
manage the constantly shifting risks that your business
faces. As always, please do get in touch with your
thoughts on any of the topics that members of our
team have chosen.
