Salinar Double-Bodied Effigy Parrot Vessel
Early Horizon – Early Intermediate Period: 200 B.C. – 100 A.D.
Ceramic
Overall: 5 7/8 x 4 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. (14.9 x 11.4 x 23.5 cm)
Typically, Salinar ceramics such as this parrot effigy vessel were slipped in
creamy white and painted with designs in red. Here, the main body of the
vessel is in a red reduction and on top of this are designs slipped in white,
derived from textiles, and executed in a freehand manner. The result is an
interesting play of the reduction technique in terms of the reversal of the color
scheme and how the artist experimented with a relatively simple inventory of
technical possibilities to maximum effect.
Provenance: Sotheby’s New York, November 20, 1989 (lot 230).
