Moche Effigy Vessel of a Bird with
Outstretched Wings
Early Intermediate Period – Middle Horizon: 200 – 900 A.D.
Ceramic painted in cream, pink and reddish brown
Overall: 7 x 7 1/8 x 5 15/16 in. (17.8 x 18.1 x 15.1 cm)
This is an early Moche effigy of a parrot with wings outspread and
clenched taloned feet, clenched as if landing from flight. Incised feathers
mark the end of the tail and wings.
Provenance: Sotheby’s New York, November 23, 1992 (lot 210).
