Ancient Forms for the Modern Eye April 2018 - Page 134

XXXII
Nazca Bird Effigy Vessel
Early Intermediate Period: 100 – 600 A.D.
Ceramic
Overall: 6 x 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. (15.2 x 16.5 x 10.8 cm)
This vessel is in the form of a water fowl of indeterminate species.
Identification may be possible from the white feathered tuff above each
eye. The white breast is covered with small fish (anchovies?) which help
identify this as a maritime creature. It is probably an early Nazca vessel.
Provenance: Acquired by the current collection in 1990.
Fine Arts of Ancient Lands, New York.
