Moche Stirrup Spout with The Botanical Frog
Early Intermediate Period – Middle Horizon: 200 – 900 A.D.
Ceramic: Whiteware with brown paint
Overall: 7 1/4 x 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. (18.4 x 13.3 x 18.4 cm)
The supernatural creature known as The Botanical Frog combines frog,
plant, feline and serpent attributes. This is a fairly simple rendering of the
theme, in which the frog face and body provide the primary form, but the pelt
spots on the body are feline traits. The Botanical Frog is associated with both
agricultural fertility rituals and militaristic processions on Moche ceramics.
Provenance: Acquired by the current owner in 1989.
