Alfred Sisley was a talented
Impressionist landscape painter.
Although born to English parents, he
spent most of his life in France. Like
many of his artistic contemporaries,
including Renoir and Monet, Sisley
painted en plein-air; the artists often
met up to paint together or to discuss
the effects of light on their subject
matter at different times of day.
Bord de Seine Près de Saint Cloud is
a fine example of the sombre palette
which characterises Sisley’s early
works. The artist’s preoccupation
with effects of the light is eloquently
expressed in the gentle hues and
tones of the sky.
