The church of St Michael
and All Angels is a
highlight. It is the only
church in England built by
prisoners of war. The trail
map shares the history
of the building, built
up over time by those
caught up in both the
Napoleonic War and War
of 1812 with America. Look
up at the stained-glass
window, installed in 1910
as a memorial to those
prisoners, and spend a
moment at the large granite
memorial cross, placed there
for the 600+ prisoners that
weren’t given a headstone.
Dartmoor Prison Museum
is well worth your time.
Discover artefacts from the
200+ years of the prison’s
history as well as records
from when the prison was
used as a Conscientious
Objector’s Work Camp in the
First World War. The shop has
gifts, souvenirs and a wide
range of garden ornaments
made in the workshops of
current inmates.
The ‘Ball and Chain’ Historic
Trail has been designed to
provide you with information
about the story of Princetown
and how the prison has
influenced many aspects of
the village’s history.
