Please leave gates how you found them. Many
farmers use gates to keep livestock in or allow
them to access a field. There’s always a reason
why they’re left a certain way.
If you’re planning to stop for food, why not
visit the local shops or pack a picnic and avoid
lighting barbecues and fires, especially in dry
weather. Wildfires pose a big risk to nature and
people; even a small spark can be devastating to
the landscape.
Find maps, walking routes and general advice
in our National Park Visitor Centres, or on our
website. Pop in to our centres to talk to our
Information Advisors before you set off – they’ll
have some great tips on where to find exciting
archaeological landmarks or quiet places with
tremendous views.
When you leave
Please keep the moor clean by taking your litter
away with you. Or perhaps – like some of our
visitors – you might want to pick up any litter
you find along your route!
Share your tips with others to help them be
more aware of how to get the most out of a visit
to Dartmoor and leave it how you found it.

How you are already helping
to protect the moor
We asked some of our regular visitors how
they reduce their environmental impact
when making a trip to Dartmoor:
We always take a packed lunch and
litter is taken back in our lunchboxes.
We use the train from Exeter to
reach Okehampton.
Ayesha
Thank you for helping us to be part of the change.
Together we can make a real difference to the
future of our countryside. By raising awareness and
promoting responsible practices that benefit not
only National Parks, we can have a positive impact
on nature, climate and our communities.
If I visit with my dogs I make sure they
are on a lead and I stick to footpaths it’s really important to me that I don’t
inadvertently disturb any of the wildlife
on the moor.
Frances
Always carry out whatever you carry in!
Never leave mess. No fires. Pick up after
others and look after the place like it
was my own!
