Forming a
wildlife corridor
Grant value: £17,540.58
Huccaby Farm in Hexworthy
is recreating 420m of historic
Devon hedge bank to help form
a wildlife corridor. The work
will be a pilot trial, providing an
opportunity to test the farm’s
raw wool and wool matting
supplied by the Dartmoor Hill
Farm Project, to see which is
more effective as a mulch.
This innovative project will
hopefully establish alternative
ways to add value to wool by
using it to suppress weeds, retain
water and protect trees. The
results will be shared with farmers
and landowners across Dartmoor.

Preserving the past
for the future
Grant value: £10,459
Dartmoor is filled with ancient
monuments stretching as far back as
the Neolithic age. Bala Brook Retreat
Centre near South Brent is dedicated
to creating a rich, diverse landscape
while taking care of important cultural
aspects on its land, including Bronze
Age hut circles.
Funding has helped them carry out a
bracken and bramble management
programme to preserve these
important monuments, complemented
by other work including tree planting
and wildlife surveys to monitor
biodiversity. The project offered
volunteering opportunities which
allowed people to gain a deeper
appreciation and understanding of
what makes Dartmoor special.
