quiet woodland trails and
valley tracks.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRAILS
Make the best of your day by:
The Wray Valley Trail
Just under seven miles and mainly traffic-free, this route links
Bovey Tracey to Moretonhampstead along the line of an old
railway. It’s suitable for walkers, runners and horse riders too.
The Granite Way
An 11-mile multi-use route between Okehampton and Lydford
taking in spectacular views across Meldon Viaduct as well as sites
of geological importance.
Drake’s Trail
Running for 21-miles between Tavistock and Plymouth, this trail
takes its name from the famous Elizabethan seafarer Sir Francis
Drake and it showcases wonderful countryside with viaducts and
tunnels to enjoy too.
Unless you are a confident rider and familiar with using a map
and compass, you may prefer going out with a riding school
or a guide.
• Sticking to bridleways, especially during the ground
nesting bird season (1st March to 31st July)
• Taking care of free roaming ponies, livestock and, in
summer, basking adders
• Wearing appropriate clothing including a helmet
(mandatory for children aged under 14) light and
bright clothes and hard-soled boots or shoes
• Giving way to walkers on a bridleway
• Not attempting to cross swollen rivers
• Phoning ahead to check facilities for your horse if
you want to stop at a pub or café for refreshments.
The Dartmoor Way
It might be a 90-mile circular route around Dartmoor, but there’s
plenty of options for shorter stages and figure-of-eight loops. Well
signed, it follows quiet lanes, minor roads and traffic-free routes.
Off-road cycling
Dartmoor offers lots of choice for off-road
adventures using bridleways and permitted
cycle routes. Planning an adventure? Scan
our QR code and check our map so you know
where you CAN ride your bike.
Please stick to designated cycling routes only; take care of
other people and allow plenty of room if you encounter
horse riders or free roaming ponies or livestock.
