Working with others
Rangers work with a variety of people,
from farmers and commoners to
conservation charities and police, to keep
this landscape special for everyone.
Volunteers such as Engagement Rangers
and Voluntary Wardens also play a big part
in helping the Rangers with their duties.
They advise and assist visitors, help promote
enjoyment and understanding of Dartmoor’s
special qualities and get involved with
practical projects.
Nigel Canham
(left) became
a Voluntary
Warden in
2015. Here’s
his take on
the role.
As a local reporter I’d known Ranger Rob Steemson for many years and
when the time came to step away from the newsdesk he asked me to
become a Voluntary Warden.
Initially I helped produce written material to support his work but quickly
branched out into outdoor activities. This includes conservation and habitat
work around Haytor as part of a regular volunteering event.
Our achievements include improved access around the quarry - Miles
Without Stiles - and uncovering the historic granite railroad that was being
lost to scrub and encroaching soil.
Walkers often ask what we’re doing and I never fail to say how privileged
we are to be among a very small set who get the chance to do what we do.
Most of us ‘consume’ Dartmoor yet as volunteers we contribute, become
part of its ongoing story.
And over the past eight years, come rain or shine, it’s become
abundantly clear that the more you give the more you get.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved.
