What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are the most advanced therapy available today
for replacing missing teeth. High-quality dental implants provide
predictable, reliable and safe long-term solutions.
They have come a long way since the pioneering work of the
Swedish Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark in the late 1950s. He
showed that if a titanium implant is placed in healthy bone, the
surrounding bone will grow on to, and attach to, the titanium
surface – a process called ‘osseointegration’. Data and research
from his work have led to a whole new branch of dentistry that
has helped transform the lives of millions of people over the
past 50 years.

A dental implant typically
consists of three main elements:
The titanium implant – this
comes in different designs, sizes
and lengths and is inserted into
your jaw bone; the bone grows
on to it in a biological process
called osseointegration.

The implant post – this fits
into the implant and
protrudes through the gum,
allowing the final implant
tooth to attach to it.
The implant tooth or crown –
this is attached to the implant
post and is the part you see; it
is cemented or screwed on to
the implant post.
