HOW DOES THIS WORK IN PRACTICE? WHAT TO
DO.
Imagine what would happen in this scenario if you
were to visualise yourself, every day, succeeding in
Maths. If you did, a new neural pathway would be
created in your brain. You would have too
consciously pay attention to information in your
environment that confirms you are succeeding in
maths and before long these would be habitual.
This information could be getting a higher grade
than a previous test, looking at the progress you’ve
made over a period of time or congratulating
yourself when you understand something, etc. This
feeds the thoughts that you are successful at Math.
‘Math= success’. Neural pathway strengthened.
You are more likely to seek out
information in your environment
that confirms your views, rather
than challenges them. Read that
again.
HOW CAN I USE THIS TO INFLUENCE MY FUTURE?
Now that you understand the power of your own
thoughts, use them to visualize your future self. Close
your eyes and ask yourself the following:
What career would this person have?
How would this person feel on a daily basis?
How would this person talk?
What habits would they have?
What thoughts would they think?
How do they dress?
How do they move?
How does it feel to be this new person?
Visualise these questions coming to life. Write them
down if it helps. Now do this every day. As often as you
can.
If you are struggling with this, try writing a letter as
your future self from the person you are today.
Imagine you are 10 years into the future. Focus on the
choices and changes you made and how they
brought you to be the person you are now. Read this
letter often to remind yourself of where you want to
be.
Check you out... not only did you visualise, you
also meditated too. Enlightenment here you
come! And here’s the thing, in your brain, that
old familiar negative neural pathway will still
try to get your attention. It sounds like ‘you
don’t need to visualise today, let’s just watch
the latest on Carole Baskin instead’, but its
your job to push past that mental resistance
and do the hard thing because you owe it to
yourself and the future you want.
