The Climate Report 2017/18 - Page 61

WWEA Annual Report 2016
- 53 GW of new installations in 2016, 17 % less than in the previous year
- Worldwide wind capacity has reached 484 GW, significantly less than expected mainly due to fall
in Chinese installations
- Germany, India and Brazil lead in new market installations in 2016
Total Installed Capacity 2012-2016 [MW]
The worldwide wind capacity reached 484’580 MW
by the end of 2016, out of which 52’728 MW were
added in 2016. This increase is significantly less than
in 2015, when 63,9 GW were added. All wind turbines
installed worldwide by 2016 can generate around 4,7
% of the world’s electricity demand.

Top Wind Markets 2016: Germany, India and Brazil
The five traditional wind countries, China, USA, Germany, India and Spain, keep their share of the global wind capacity
in 72 %. In terms of new capacity, China saw a dramatic decrease in terms of new installations. USA, Germany and India
saw an increase in their installations compared to the previous year, and Spain, again, play hardly a role. The Big Five’s
share in new capacity accounts for 73 %.
In total, seven countries installed more than 1 GW in 2016: China (23 GW of new capacity), USA (6,1 GW), Germany
(5,4 GW), India (3,5 GW), Brazil (2,0 GW), France (1,7 GW) and Turkey (1,3 GW).
The top 15 wind countries show a diverse picture in 2016: half performed stronger than in 2015: Germany, India, Spain,
France, Turkey, Portugal and Denmark.
