Developments by Region
Country/Region
The 10 largest markets for new wind turbines next to
China, USA, Germany, and India were: Brazil (2’085 MW),
France (1’722 MW), Turkey (1’363 MW), UK (898 MW), The
Netherlands (887 MW) and Canada (693 MW). France
surpassed Canada and became the 7th largest market.
Brazil surpassed Italy during the first half of the year and is

Europe
Europe continued reducing its share of the global
installed capacity accounting 32 % by the end of 2016. The
European markets showed a similar picture than in 2015:
Germany and France increased for the second year in a
row their new installations. The UK saw a small decreased,
898 MW after 1’174 MW in 2015. The Netherlands and
Turkey saw a significant increase of 775 MW and 408 MW
respectively, compared with the previous year.

TOP 15 countries by growth rate in 2016
Germany is still the unchallenged number one wind market in Europe, with a new capacity of 5,4 GW and a total of 50
GW – a rush resulting from anticipated switch away from FiTs.
Asia: Downfall in China and record year in India
Again in 2016, China has been by far the largest single wind market, adding 23,3 GW. However, it means a decreased
of almost 10 GW compared to the previous year, but still accounting for 44 % of the world market for new wind turbines. By
the end of 2016, China had an overall installed capacity of 168 GW. India again added a record 3,5 GW, which means 1,2
GW more than in 2016, when it installed 2,3 GW.
The Japanese and the Korean wind markets are still growing at very modest rates, with both countries adding 198 MW
during 2016.
Pakistan recorded the highest growth rate worldwide with 131 % during 2016, also a result of WWEA’s long-term strategic advice to the government.
North America
The US market saw a small increase during 2016; adding 8,2 GW in 2016, 8,1 GW were installed during 2015. Canada
installed 693 MW during 2016, only 46 % of what was installed in the previous year.
Latin America
The biggest Latin American market and 9th worldwide, Brazil, installed 2 GW in 2016 and reached a total capacity of
10’800 MW, with a growth rate of 23,9 %. Brazil is expected to continue as the lead market in the region and could reach
the 6th position worldwide before 2018.
Other major Latin American markets showed high growth rates during 2016: Chile (52,6 %) and Uruguay (41,4 %). The
Argentinean wind market is expected to grow very fast from 2017.
