guide long-term power investment and provide an indication of
government vision.
Working with other RE industry associations on the SA RE
Council (SAREC), the SA Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) has
been focusing its efforts this year on two main work streams:
in the short-term, ensuring that the routine practical business
of operational Wind IPPs can continue to benefit from mutual
policy learning and maturity; in the long-term, ensuring that the
REI4P impasse with Eskom is overcome and the programme can
resume. It is our hope that by the November 2017, when our
annual international conferences – Windaba and WindAc Africa
are hosted in Cape Town, the latter work stream in particular, will
be well on-track.

failed to ensure financial closure of projects representing a total

2017 is proving to be a watershed year for SA’s budding RE
sector. A recent cabinet shuffle which resulted in changes to the
key ministries associated with Energy policy and planning – the
Departments of Energy, Finance and Public Enterprises – have
left South Africans wondering what the knock-on effects will
be for the REI4P and key policy updates such as the Integrated

Following its successful inaugural conference last year,
SAWEA will host the second academic conference for wind
power alongside Windaba, on November 14th and 15th,
2017. Recognising the value of transcending boundaries in
order to stimulate potential, the theme of the WindAc Africa
2017 conference is “Wind Power Without Borders”. WindAc
is a mutually appreciative networking environment in which
dialogues between experienced researchers, motivated
students and wind industry actors is actively facilitated.
Windaba Conference and Exhibition is recognised as Africa’s
Premier Wind Energy event. Hosted by the South African
Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) in proud partnership
with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). The seventh
Windaba will take place on November 15th and 16th, 2017 at
the Cape Town International Convention and brings together
some 600 delegates annually – from Industry, government,
finance and research sectors. Windaba is a strategic platform
for all businesses with wind energy interests on the Continent.
