ABOUT THE SOCIETY
The Royal Meteorological Society is the
UK’s Professional and Learned Society for
weather and climate. The Society serves not
only those in academia and professional
meteorologists, but also those whose work
is affected in some way or other by the
weather or climate, or simply have a general
interest in the weather.
Our mission is to promote meteorology as a
science, profession and interest
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
ACTIVITIES
MEMBERSHIP
The Society plays a key role as the
custodian of both the science and
the profession of meteorology in
the UK and has an important role
to play internationally as one of
the world’s largest meteorological
societies. The Society’s mission
has a wide remit that looks to
support people’s understanding,
interest and enthusiasm in
meteorology. It goes further,
supporting the development
of high-quality science, the
next generation of scientists,
accrediting courses, professional
development, informing policy
and supporting learning through
education and outreach activities.
The Society administers the
national qualifications of the
profession,
publishes
seven
international science journals
and has an active education
programme for teachers and
children. Our programme of
conferences
and
meetings
brings
together
operational
and amateur meteorologists,
scientists and students, as
well as industry from across
the international community.
The Society also provides support
to the media and is actively
involved in Government policy
development on areas around
weather and climate change.
Anyone with an interest in the
weather, its impact, the science
behind it, or the interface with
related disciplines, such as
hydrology and oceanography can
join the Society. The membership
includes scientists, practitioners,
students and weather enthusiasts,
with a worldwide membership
of 3,400 people from over 50
countries. Membership has many
benefits including our monthly
Weather magazine, a free online
CPD tool, attendance at meetings
