YEAR 6 RESIDENTIAL
Year 6 had a hugely successful residential
trip to Birch Hall Adventure Centre, Essex.
Although not far geographically speaking, it was a world away
in so many respects.
The trip aimed to offer children the chance to forge and
strengthen bonds, to lead and to be led, and to challenge
themselves whilst leaving their comfort zones. It certainly
achieved all of these things and was also a lot of fun!
The centre was set on a farm which adjoined a National
Wetland Nature Reserve – a really idyllic spot which had a
true feeling of wilderness. In true ‘Swallows & Amazons’ style,
tablets, social media and online music videos were swapped
for oars, tree-climbing and Mr Roger’s campfire sing-alongs.
Children started the trip by erecting their tents and readying
their kit for the first tent inspection – something they seemed
to really enjoy! After that the days were punctuated with
numerous outdoor activities, free play and eating! Highlights
this year included kayaking, seal-spotting, high ropes and
archery.
The pupils also enjoyed a moonlit game of ‘The Smugglers’
Challenge’, which essentially involved them having to solve
a clue whilst evading the attention of the ‘Coastguard’ (aka
teaching staff). Campfire talent contests and marshmallow
toasting were also firm favourites for the staff and pupils alike.
The children really were fantastic company, and they did both
the school and themselves very proud indeed. Well done them.
