A HISTORY OF BRANDESTON HALL
– A FOLLOW-UP.
Author of The History of Brandeston Hall, Norman Porter,
sent a copy of the book to Mansell Beard, who taught
at Brandeston in the 1960s. Mansell kindly responded
by sending back a collection of images from those years,
including images from The Pied Piper, The Witchfinder
General (Readers may remember that this was turned
into a film, and that one of the victims of the Witchfinder
General was the Vicar of Brandeston, whose sad fate is
depicted on the Village Sign), a visit to a Kettleburgh Farm,
The new Art Room, and a number of classroom and sports
pictures. Recognisable names featuring in those pictures
include Rosen, McGuire, Le Grove, Mehta, Birrell
(tragically killed in snowcat), Pemberton and Jacob.
All have been passed on to Brandeston, so if you are
interested, you know where and whom to ask….
This year is the 10th anniversary of the publishing of that
History. It covers the years from the building of the hall and
the first Lords of the Manor, through to the requisition of
the hall during WW2, its being purchased by the SOF as
a war memorial, memories of the early years, and many
descriptions of life, activities and people over the first
60 years of its history as a school. There are still copies
around….

INAUGURAL JONATHAN HULLEY MEMORIAL LECTURE
The first annual Jonathan Hulley Memorial Lecture was held at the
College on 27 February 2019. Jonathan Hulley (K10-16), who was
a cricket-loving student at the College from 2010-16, was tragically
killed in 2017. This featured an interview with Ed Smith, current
National Selector England Cricket. The event also saw the unveiling
of the Jonathan Hulley Memorial Clock, which will take pride of
place on the Cricket Pavilion. The event also raised over £200 for
East Anglian Air Ambulance Charity and Tom’s Trust.

THE CLASS OF ‘84 MEETING FOR 50TH
BIRTHDAY YEAR CELEBRATION
1969/70 marks the 50th birthdays for the girls of
Pembroke and Victoria who joined The College in
1984. To mark the occasion Kate Chapman (nee Evans) and Nikki Edwards took on the challenge of finding as many of their old school friends from both the
girls houses, Pembroke and Victoria. Kate said “some
we were already in touch with but others we had no
clue where they were or where to start looking.” A
search through social media, emails and good old
fashioned detective work meant that in early November 13 former girls met for brunch at the Lemon Tree
and then a tour around The College hosted by Kate
Jackson. The next meet up is already planned for
mid May 2020 and hopefully will carry on for years to
come now the girls have made contact.

ROSIE BULLEN
Rosie contacted us with news as to what she has been doing during
her time in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. She
completed her first year of studies at the end of May and returned
to the UK for the summer. Rosie attended the London Supper in
July where she kindly ‘sang for her supper’ by singing two songs
unaccompanied.
Rosie was involved in a concert at Dizzy’s Jazz Club, as part of the
Lincoln Centre in New York which was conducted by Jim McNeely
(ten-time Grammy Nominated composer/arranger). She described
this as an incredible experience and a significant moment in her
musical career and sent us a picture of the occasion – to be used for
publicity purposes, as appropriate.
Rosie is extremely grateful to the SOF for a contribution to the costs
of her year in the US and is now trying to raise money for her final
year at the School of Music.
