This year, my annual trawl for
contributions to the With the
Services column has resulted in 5
responses received – sadly with
none from the Royal Navy! For
those who have written, I am
most grateful for the interesting
and topical reports and images
provided.
On a personal note, I relinquished
my appointment as the Honorary
Air Commodore of No 4626
(Aeromedical Evacuation) Squadron
RAuxAF at the end of July 2019.
This marked the end of my 50 years
in uniform – 40 years as a regular
and 10 years assisting the reserves.
I had a hugely enjoyable career
and had many great professional
opportunities, experiences and
challenges far beyond anything
I ever envisaged when I left
Framlingham College in 1967 to
start my training as a medical
student at The London Hospital
(University of London).
As a Trustee of the RAF Benevolent
Fund – celebrating its 100th
Anniversary this year – and
a Governor of the Royal Star
and Garter Homes, I continue
to voluntarily support Service
Veterans.

Maj Marcus Massey ‘bagging a Munro’ – in the middle
I was delighted to receive an email
from Major Marcus Massey CEng
IMechE REME (G 88-97) in July 2019:
When I wrote my update this time last
year, I was just coming to the end of
my Company Command tour and was
about to embark on a tour as a Career
Manager (appointer in the Naval lexicon)
for REME Majors based in the Army’s
Personnel Centre in Glasgow. I’m now
132
THE FRAMLINGHAMIAN 2019
nearly a year in and have completed a
full cycle of the various appointment and
promotion boards. Despite significant
manning pressures, I find the job extremely
rewarding. Moreover, the real highlight
is the location which allows us to discover
Scotland. We’ve visited many of the
Hebridean Islands and even spent my 40th
Birthday in the Ben Nevis Range. We also
regularly take advantage of city living with
trips to the various theatres and concert
halls via a glass or three of wine without
the requirement for pre-planning the
journey home which our County Durham
cottage requires!
Marcus, thank you for your update.
I was pleased to hear that your
experience as a ‘Desk Officer’ is a
rewarding one!
