NICK CARLTON (G63-70) our retired cruise ship captain has
been on his travels again but without a ship! He undertook a long
overseas trip during 2019 to Hong Kong and the UK and had a
most enjoyable and interesting time.
He stayed with Chris Hall in his apartment on the Peak in Hong
Kong and visited a number of interesting places – pictured on Tai
Tam Waterworks Heritage trail. They also had a couple of excellent
dinners out including one at the Cafe Gray Deluxe.
DOUG DENBY (S51-57) was contacted by a distant cousin of his
via SOF Admin and we put them in touch. Doug was diagnosed
with Parkinson’s some 7 years ago and more recently prostate
cancer. Doug is related to Otto Ziegele, a major benefactor of the
College.
(M72-76) was a fellow contemporary of RICHARD
(K69-76) who died earlier this year. He was sad to
hear the news. After working in the film industry, then teaching,
he’s on to his third and hopefully final career, with a local NGO,
supporting people who’ve attempted suicide.

MIKE GARNET T (R53-55) was emailed by CHRIS SHAW (K5056) in January 2019 as a result of the death of KEN MACKENZIE
(K45-53). In February Mike was interested to read about the
Munnings exhibition as he included the Munnings painting ‘Charge
of Flowerdew’s Squadron’ in his book ‘Yeomanry Regiments of
Great Britain and the Colonies’ which was published last year.

He ended up having six weeks in the UK and caught up with a lot
of friends including WILLIAM PIPER (G61-68) a couple of times
which was great (pictured at Angel Inn at Sudbury). He also went
to see June de Whalley a couple of times in Framlingham and
although frail is still as bright as a button.
JIM COE (Z80-89) is the brother of OF Coordinator KATE JACKSON (P84-93) and Chris
Shaw very kindly arranged for a bottle of Jim’s
wine (pictured) to be sent to me in the UK.
I’m not just saying this but it was the nicest
bottle of Aussie red I have ever tasted. It was
a wonderfully smooth shiraz. Jim thanked me
for my kind comments and said that he had just
been back to England. Kate sent me a couple of
family photos taken during Jim’s visit.
JOHN GATES (S44-48) has been in touch on a regular basis and
has been very good at visiting PETER BAILEY (K34-38) nearby
to him. At the start of the year he was cruising to NZ and when
news came through of a cruise to Hawaii I put him in touch with
BRYAN PEARSON (S45-47). They were both at the College at the
same time and in the same house. Plans were made for Bryan to
meet them off the ship on 11 September 2019 but sadly at the last
minute John & Ruth were not well enough to get off the ship so they
didn’t manage to meet up after all these years.
JOHN LING (S49-56) (Honorary Aussie!) as you will read
elsewhere in this report, has been undertaking a world tour and
while visiting Cairns in Australia spent some time with CHRIS &
REBECCA SHAW (K50-56) and then in Sydney COLIN LIPMAN
(R53-61) organised an OF reunion.
IAN COT TINGHAM (61-66) was in touch in October 2019 with a
change of address to the wonderfully named Mystery Bay, NSW.
