GEORGE COULSON
(G02-15)
George writes: “After I left Framlingham College
I moved to London to study Artist development in
Stratford (where Ed Sheeran attended) and then on
to ICMP University in Kilburn to study songwriting
where I recently graduated with a First. My band
‘The Valla’ are about to release our debut EP ‘Just
Chemicals’ recorded by Andy Hall (Bastille, The
Wombats, Rag‘n’bone man). The second single
from the EP ‘Anymore’ was recently played on BBC
introducing South, where we were selected a week
later as ‘BBC Radio South Introducing featured artist’
and played on air for the second time.”

THE FRAMLINGHAMIAN 2019
ALEX TINKER (G04-14)
Alex writes: “Whilst most of my peers were applying for their fulltime degree places at university, I was looking for options that
allowed me to start my working career at an earlier stage. I had
spent the previous two summers working within the construction
sector for the family business and thoroughly enjoyed the
experience.
It became apparent that the construction sector was one of the
leading industries for promoting training and apprenticeship type
roles. In March 2014 I was offered a role with Rose Builders Ltd as
a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, which would commence that summer
following the completion of my A-Levels.
The role included the full sponsorship to attend the University
of Westminster to study for a degree in Quantity Surveying &
Commercial Management on a part-time basis, whilst gaining
valuable experience at work that most others wouldn’t be exposed
to until post-university. I graduated in July 2019, achieving an
Upper Second-Class Honours degree. I would strongly recommend
anyone to join the industry, and particularly this entry route. (Even
though it takes a little longer to attain the degree, having no
student debt and earning a salary whilst learning far outweighs this
minor consequence!)
I am grateful for the experience I have already gained at 23 years
old. More recently I have relocated to London to take a Quantity
Surveyor position for McLaren Construction Ltd and am currently
involved in a multi-million pound residential scheme and am sure
that the exposure and experience I’ll obtain will allow my career in
construction to progress further.
I’d be happy to discuss my route into the construction industry to
anyone currently considering this as an option for themselves.”
