OFGS AUTUMN MEETING 2019
OFGS V ALDEBURGH GOLF CLUB 2019
The meeting was held in dry, mostly sunny,
conditions on Friday, 20th September at
Aldeburgh Golf Club.
This match was played on Saturday, 21st September.
The match was most enjoyable with perfect weather but, as you might imagine
with fast fairways and greens and quite punishing rough, local knowledge
overcame us and we lost 4 games to 1.
We were looked after superbly as usual
by the host club and enjoyed playing on
an excellent course in superb condition. It
was quite a challenge as the hard brown
fairways seemed to deflect anything
other than a perfectly straight shot into
the direction of the rough and gorse!
Consequently the scoring was not as high
as usual and was made more challenging
by the fact that Aldeburgh have removed
“bogey” from the card, effectively
reducing everyone’s score by 4 points!
This year we had an excellent turnout
of 26 players including College staff,
Johann Myburgh and Neil Jackson who
both played in the morning. Neil stayed
for lunch and was joined by Nick Gandy
who should have been playing but had
sadly managed to injure his back the day
before.
It was also good to have three new young
faces in Connor O’Leary, Ben Slaven and
Alex Gordon amongst our numbers.

The team was James Blyth & Connor O’Leary; Martin Lamb & Guy Jenkinson;
Michael Spencer & James Brocks; Peter Howard-Dobson & Kevin Hambling and
Barry Hitchcock & Ben Slaven.
Peter Howard -Dobson and Kevin Hambling were our only winners, but we were
not disgraced with most games being decided on the 18th hole.
The consolation was another very tasty and convivial lunch with several Aldeburgh
members now well known to us.
HALFORD HEWIT T 2019
Framlingham triumph in first round of
Hewitt!
Two rookie players, Archie Winter and Jake
Swinburn made their debut this year, both
having left school the previous summer. A
squad of twelve was assembled and played
in the practice round. The Captain, Jonny
Newton, plotted and guided Archie Winter
round and Jake Swinburn partnered Hugh
Curle.
Framlingham played against Eastbourne
at Royal Cinque Ports, Deal, winning by a
margin of 3–2.

It was great to have Jake and Archie joining
the team this year. There is much promise
for the future, and we are hopeful of further

Round Two: Framlingham v Loretto
Framlingham more than met their match,
losing 3.5 v 1.5 to a team that reached
the semi-finals. The wheels literally did
drop off, the Captain having a puncture
and (despite the photograph) had to rely
on the ingenuity of farmer Matt Low to
get the wheel off in order to make it back
to Suffolk! Returning to the golf, Curle &
Swinburn did not see much of the back
nine! Again, Newton & Winter scored a
point, with Atton & Watts gaining a half.
