SUBJECTS
English and Media Centre Conference - Year 13
ENGLISH
The year has contained some real
highlights. External examinations saw
Amelia Schroeter at A Level perform
outstandingly; an A* and a 50/50
coursework essay praised by the exam
board were richly deserved. The GCSE
examinations saw Imogen Hainsworth
achieve full marks in Literature Paper 2
and a quarter of all students managed
to outstrip their target grades and mock
performances in English Language.
Competitions and events designed to
enrich, engage and challenge continue; a
new Poetry by Heart winner emerged
with Daisy Ford becoming a worthy winner
despite only being a Year 10. Our Year 9s
took on the world again in the Wordmania
competition and we managed to place
in the Top 50 globally. Fresh impetus
was given to our Year 9 Detective Story
Writing Competition and Ruby Boddy’s
knowing pastiche of classic sleuthing was
a superbly written winning entry.
With A Level English Literature recruitment
remaining healthy despite some worrying
national trends, I am confident that students
of English are well served in Framlingham
College. In the face of news reports
Daisy Ford presented with Poetry by
Heart Prize from Leo Goldsmith
dominated by talk of STEM, job earnings
and vocational skills, nothing will replace
the power of being able to read, write,
listen and speak well – even major tech
companies like Google and Apple have
made it clear that their stars of the future
need to have superb communication
skills above all else. Our students work to
develop these skills alongside building an
appreciation for our literary heritage.
