COMMON
ROOM
MATTERS
IT HAS BEEN A RELATIVELY
QUIET YEAR IN THE
NUMBER OF COMMON
ROOM LEAVERS.
Tereza Shopova and Gaetan Robin were
very important as our language assistants
for the year. Both were hugely valued
not only in their departments but also in
the wider life of the College. Gustavo
Ornelas-Almaraz taught Business
and Economics and was resident in
Rendlesham House. In both roles, he was
highly respected and regarded with huge
affection - we will miss his smile! Colin
Turner leaves us after four years in the DT
department. As well as being a craftsman
of undeniable skill, he has also been an
important tutor in Garrett House and a
stalwart of the CCF. We wish him every
success as he takes up a post in Dubai as
Head of Department.
Though his departure is dealt with in more
detail elsewhere, the Common Room also
wishes to mention the departure of Paul
Taylor. We have valued his open door

enormously, and he leaves with our grateful
thanks for the stability, decency and warmth
that he has brought to the Common Room
in his time as Headmaster.
Colin Turner
Bob Skitch arrived at the College in 1988
and after 31 years of dedicated service he
leaves for well-deserved retirement. Bob’s
commitment has gone far beyond his
science teaching to enrich the lives of the
many students he has seen through. He
has run the RAF section of the CCF, been
a constant presence on Duke of Edinburgh
Award expeditions and was a dedicated
member of the Rugby, Hockey and Cricket
coaching staff. A fierce competitor, he
would strive for the win even in an internal
training game and his beloved 3rd teams
fed off his search for the victory on a
Saturday. He was in charge of Careers
and Higher Education for over 20 years,
gathering together a huge wealth of
knowledge which he used for the benefit
of students embarking on their futures. He
was thoroughly committed to the College
and was an unfailingly genial presence in
the Common Room – he leaves with our
fondest good wishes for a happy retirement.
