Fred & Jess Lamprell
Our first outing was to the Suffolk Schools’
Athletics Champions to which we take
our top Year 8 athletes to. This year, I was
delighted to be able to take eight pupils,
competing in a range of track and field
events. In tough competitions, where they’re
competing against Year 9 students, they all
did very well. Pick of the results were; Alice
Verebelyi’s 3rd place in the 100m final and
Freddie Powell’s 2nd place in discus.
We stayed in Suffolk for our next meet
when eleven pupils took part in the County
Track & Field Championships at Northgate
Stadium, Ipswich. Being early in the season,
this is an excellent opportunity for them to
set a benchmark for the rest of term. The
children did not disappoint, with no less
than eleven medals the standard was set
very high. Artemis Wild, Freddie Powell,
Fred Lamprell, Dan and Mia North all
receiving bronze medals for their events.
Artemis went one better in her high and
long jumps to win silver medals. Toby
Jackson completed the set, winning all
three of his events and being crowned
County Champion at hurdles, discus and
shot put.

THE FRAMLINGHAMIAN 2019
Alice Verebelyi
Travelling to North Norfolk did not
allow us to escape from the rain and the
Gresham’s Eight Schools meet was a
somewhat damp affair. However, with new
weights and measurements introduced by
English Athletics this year, it was a chance
to set some new records. Our tradition
of producing good shot putters continues
with Rafa Sedeño, Toby Jackson and Dylan
Pillet-Avery all setting new school records.
However it was Alice Verebelyi’s run of
13.36s in the 100m, breaking an eighteen
year old school record, that stands out for
me.
Unfortunately, Storm Miguel ran amuck
through the Junior Prep Schools Athletics
meet and so once again Year 4 and 5
missed out on an inter-school competition.
Fingers crossed for next year.
Which brings us round to the Senior Prep
Schools’ Athletics meet held at Bedford.
In the fifteen years I’ve been attending
the competition I have not experienced
the weather we had back at the start of
June. Many of the events took place in
howling winds and steady rain and, shortly

after lunch, we were forced to stop for 45
minutes to allow the worst of the storm to
pass. However, none of this prevented the
athletes producing some amazing results.
Rafa Sedeño (shot), Harry Cartwright
and Toby Jackson (discus), James Laurie
(javelin) and Heather Alabaster (shot and
hurdles) all set new records. Sofia Odiz
had a tremendous 100m race, narrowly
missing out on a place at the Nationals
by 4/10ths of a second. However, Prep
School was represented at Birmingham as
Fred Lamprell secured second place in the
high jump and his sister, Jess, competing
a year young, became the East of England
Prep Schools Champion by winning the
U12 Girls’ shot put with a giant push of
7.32m. Fred and Jess travelled to the
Alexander Stadium to represent the East
at the National Prep Schools’ Athletics
Championship. Fred jumped well to secure
8th place and Jess had an outstanding
performance to gain 3rd place and a
bronze medal.
