ACADEMIC MATTERS
HEADS OF
SCHOOL &
PREFECTS
Heads of School, Anna Cogdell and
Charlie Hall, finished the year with an
excellent speech, enjoyed by all at Speech
Day. They have proven to be fantastic
ambassadors for the school and great role
models for the younger pupils. As a team,
the prefects have ably supported Anna and
Charlie and hugely contributed to many
school events, working together in a most
positive fashion. The following should be
congratulated for their efforts this year:
Walter Bruce-Miller, Connie Henriques,
Rose Cadman, Toby Ward and James
Tennant.

THE FRAMLINGHAMIAN 2019
There were indeed some big shoes to
fill at the start of this academic year
with the departure of Robin Sampson
after thirty years at Brandeston Hall.
The person tasked with filling these was
me, the newly appointed Deputy Head
who relocated from West Sussex with
my wife and two children. It has been
very evident to me that Robin meant so
much to so many people and I am very
grateful for the comprehensive handover
which has helped me to take up the
reins. Coincidently, we both now live
in Framlingham, have ‘salt ‘n’ pepper’
mini schnauzers and have a similar grey
accent to our hair. The only difference is
Robin seems to look younger every time I
see him, I’m not sure I’m wearing as well.
We had a number of staff departures
towards the end of the year with Elaine
Atkin taking up the post of Head of
English at St John’s, Cambridge and
Helen Russell becoming Director
of Studies at The Abbey School,
Woodbridge. James Ridge joins us as
Head of Humanities from Marlborough
House and Simon Means will take over
as acting Head of Maths.
In my first year I have tried hard to build
on the excellent work of both Robin and
Kirsty Stark. Staff have experienced
some different approaches to training
with a successful ‘speed dating’ event
in January, providing staff with the
opportunity to share ideas to stretch the
more able pupils.
Numerous twilight events and nearly
twenty different workshops in April helped
to keep a real emphasis on excellence
and teaching and learning. Online
assessment of pupils across the school
are now fully established and provides
staff with a clear understanding of current
progress and pupil potential.
We were delighted with the Year 8 13+
Common Entrance examinations. 94%
of the pupils will be moving on to the
College. 9 students (19%) achieved
three A*/As, 19 students (40%) achieved
a mixture of A*/A & B grades and 23
students (49%) achieved at least one A
grade.
