Lt Col Phill Moxey with his HQ Team just before they return home from Kabul
In July 2019, Lieutenant Colonel Phill
Moxey MBE Royal Anglian (R91-95)
wrote:
A shortish update this year - I have
entered my second year in command
of The First Battalion The Royal Anglian
Regiment. Although based in Woolwich
we have spent little time there due to
operational commitments. Most notably
has been the commitment of three
companies and the HQs to Op TORAL
in Kabul. This is our 6th deployment
to Afghanistan in the past decade, so
a country we are now pretty familiar
with. This time the role is not combat,
but instead is about providing protection
Lt Col Phill Moxey exchanging gifts with his Mongolian partners
to the wealth of advisers, diplomats
and security staff who are all working
to develop and improve the Afghan
Government. Described as ‘Armoured
Uber’ by the BBC, it’s a different and
challenging role but an important one that
can be directly linked to making progress
towards building resilient, freestanding
Afghan institutions that will no longer
need the support of the international
community. It was a seven-month
deployment for most of us, but as I write we
are back home and resetting for the future,
as I watch for the final return of my other
company - which has been conducting UN
peacekeeping duties in South Sudan. It
will be good to have the whole unit back
together in the next few weeks after almost
a year apart.
I will likely be in command for another year
- with retraining and renewing our focus on
training African partners in W Africa likely
to dominate. Plus, hopefully, some good
old fashioned in-barracks infantry business
of boxing, shooting and rebuilding field
skills. But we will see - the Army normally
has other ideas!
Phill, I am most grateful for you most
interesting update. I enjoyed watching
your television interviews broadcast on
Look East during your time in Kabul.
Enjoy the rest of your Command tour.
